What the HELL are we doing to our Girls?

Just a heads up - this is going to be a bit of a rant today! It's not just ludicrous- it's sad. *I'm actually writing this about a week after I wrote that first sentence...sometimes you just know when you need to step back and take a deep breath. This subject is TOO important to write this from a spastic, hyper ranting place. What started this post was a segment I saw on Good Morning America last week while I was at the gym (so keep in mind I didn't hear what this moron was saying to defend his position, I was listening to music- but closed caption was enough). And with the rest of the ass backwards nonsense that seems to be along the same lines as this idiot author- I figured it was time to chime in. I've debated on even sharing the name of this pathetic little book for the simple fact that I don't want this author to get any more attention that he already has, but that would sort of defeat the point. Ready for this? "Maggie Goes on A Diet", by Paul Kramer. First- let's look at the book description on Amazon: This book is about a 14 year old girl who goes on a diet and is transformed from being extremely overweight and insecure to a normal sized girl who becomes the school soccer star. Through time, exercise and hard work, Maggie becomes more and more confident and develops a positive self image. Second- take a look at the book cover image: crappy-book-don't-buy I have a 14 year old daughter- and she's in HIGH SCHOOL! Does this even kind of look like a high school student? And gee- I don't know if the whopping 44 pages of this piece of crap is something my daughter can handle. Oh.. I forgot- this book is targeted for 4-8 year olds!!! WHAT THE HELL!!!!! REALLY????

Is this the message we need our girls to hear at 4 years old? WTF?!

I am by NO means saying there isn't an epidemic with our children in this country with weight/obesity - but with ALL of the information we have today on eating healthy and exercising being a way of life- aka LIFESTYLE - is this really a message we need to send to our young girls? And before I get onto a few more rants about the horrific way we're allowing society to dictate this garbage to our girls- let's get onto my "Isn't it Ironic" third point (thank you Alanis Morisette for that awesome song... and being a strong, amazing woman): Third- this author is OVERWEIGHT??!!! Any attempt at him remotely being credible (not that I thought he had a fighting chance in hell from the get go)- was completely blown away when I saw him sitting on TV- overweight himself. The first thing that came to mind when I saw this guy... (que Seth Meyers from Saturday Night Live)- REALLY? REALLY....

More Garbage

I LOVE this blog I found the other day via my friend Michele Spring-Fajeau of Alas-I-Digress. Found the link via Facebook and of course subscribed right away. You need to just head over to the site 'Redefine Girly' and thank author Melissa Wardy for this site and her stance on what is happening to our kids in this country. The title of this post is called:

Pretty's Got Nothing To Do With It

In this post Melissa shares a ridiculous t-shirt JCPenney is selling that says: "I'm too Pretty to do my homework so my brother has to do it for me". ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME??? You can read more about this stupid shirt and the other ridiculous things that are being marketed to our girls on Melissa's site- she said it perfectly.

Final thoughts

I honestly feel like I'm living in a Twilight Zone with the crap that is being marketed to girls today. Just in looking back at some of the things that have made the news this year (and this is hardly a comprehensive list- I prefer NOT to watch the news. My extent is pretty much Good Morning America while I'm at the gym. It's just too depressing) it really makes you wonder if we've time warped backwards somehow?
  • Abercrombie & Fitch making padded push up bikini tops for 7 year olds
  • Workout shoes for little girls
  • Botox mom (she's just a friggin' idiot)
  • The latest Vogue spread of a LITTLE girl who has been vamped up to look like a sex kitten
  • And now this crappy book and stupid merchandise?

Personally - THESE are the messages my daughter gets- and it's going out to EVERY girl I know!

This is India Arie singing "Beautiful"
And of course- you can't leave out Beyonce'....Run The World (Girls) A couple of my favorite lines from this song:

"Raise a glass to the college grads"

"Smart enough to make these millions, strong enough to bare the children, then get back to business"

  1. Wow, Kim! You are so right on! Your kids are lucky to have you for a mom. This would be perfect for Kid Focused. May I paste and link back to your site?

    • Um… ABSOLUTELY! :-) Thanks Julie!
And thanks- I think I’m pretty to lucky to have my kids. I couldn’t be prouder of the people they’re becoming.

  2. Deborah Hansen-Ching :

Good Lord. Here is the interview with the fine looking man who wrote this trying to justify his choice of title and subject matter:
    Mamma mia.
